Who Is Hernán

Hernán Horacio Méndez is a photographer, videographer, and storyteller based in Scottsdale, Arizona. Born in Mexicali, Baja California, he grew up between the desert and the Sea of Cortez, spending weekends in San Felipe, where his family operated an RV campground. Those early years—reading tides, navigating small boats, watching how light shifted across water and sand—shaped the observational discipline that defines his work today.

He earned a full athletic scholarship to Tecnológico de Monterrey, where he studied Industrial Design. Photography first captured his attention in high school and matured through product photography and 3D modeling during college. These foundations in form, proportion, material, and light continue to inform his approach across still and motion work.

Before opening his own studio, Hernán worked at TM Advertising in Houston, contributing to national broadcast, digital, and print campaigns for clients such as American Airlines, Nationwide Insurance, Texas Tourism, Supercuts, Baylor Health, and Hotels.com. He supported Directors of Photography on commercial sets, assisted with lighting and camera prep, captured BTS and secondary plates, and maintained calibrated color pipelines across motion and print assets. The experience exposed him to large-scale production environments, fast-moving creative teams, and the technical standards required for agency-level commercial work.

He later expanded into documentary and nonfiction filmmaking as a beginner cinematographer and assistant producer with Elicosma Production. There, he shot documentary footage across multiple countries, including interviews, b-roll, and location-based visual storytelling. His work involved coordinating international travel, training scouting teams, securing access to archaeological and cultural sites, supporting underwater and cave-diving shoots, and conducting research that informed narrative development. This field experience strengthened his logistical discipline and taught him how to operate in unpredictable environments while maintaining technical precision.

In 2018, Hernán founded Arrecife Photography, a studio specializing in commercial, product, and architectural imaging, as well as 360° tours, video production, and audio recording. He is completing his M.S. in Graphic Information Technology at Arizona State University (graduating December 2025), focusing on commercial photography, video, and audio workflows, 360° capture, media production pipelines, and the business mechanics of creative work. His graduate studies also include stop-motion animation, podcast production, and film coursework—reflecting a multidisciplinary practice grounded in design thinking and technical rigor.

Hernán has lived in Mexicali, Monterrey, Barcelona, Paris, Houston, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, experiences that broadened his sense of culture, light, and visual structure. Outside of client work, he enjoys cooking, language study, and spending time with his Aussie mix dog and his wife, a graphic designer whose creative perspectives often intersect with his own.
